Tribute to Dusty Cohl

Thirty-three years ago, three people came up with the brash idea of starting a film festival in Toronto. One of those men passed away early this year. Dusty Cohl was an iconic figure. His distinctive cowboy hat, full of pins, set a tone. He was passionate about film and Canadian talent. Along with Bill Marshall and Henk van der Kolk he founded an event that has become much loved.

At the Opening Night of the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival, a tribute film to Dusty had its world premiere. Created by Barry Avrich, TIFFG Board member and long-time friend of Dusty, these few minutes give its audience an inside and personal look at one of the men who was there thirty-three years ago when an idea to bring the world’s best films to Toronto was born.

The Board and staff of TIFFG will miss the vision, commitment and sense of humour of the irreplaceable Dusty Cohl.
