official description

A beautiful, painterly film set in the gorgeous Calabrian countryside, Le Quattro volte is also a genre-defying work of cinematic transcendence. In an isolated Calabrian village, an elderly goatherd tends to his flock and tries to stave off a disturbing, hacking cough; finally succumbing to his illness, he is progressively reincarnated as a baby goat, a mighty fir tree and, finally, a lump of coal(!). As he traces the odd voyage of his protagonist-soul, Frammartino seamlessly blends his philosophical speculations with fascinating documentary glimpses of local customs and traditions (including the annual ‘Pita’ festivities) and intricate, Tati-like sequence shots, most notably in the hilarious mid-film showstopper involving a dog, a rock, a flock of sheep and a costumed saint’s-day parade.
