Celebrated stage and film director Julie Taymor (The Lion King, Titus, Across the Universe) returns to her theatrical roots for this flamboyantly postmodern Shakespearean adaptation. A regal Helen Mirren plays Prospera, a sorceress banished to an island with her young daughter Miranda (Felicity Jones) by her usurping brother Antonio (Chris Cooper). Determined to see her daughter restored to her rightful station, Prospera conjures a storm to bring treacherous Antonio and young Prince Ferdinand (Reeve Carney) to the island, where a host of monsters and spirits—including the dangerous and deformed slave Caliban (Djimon Hounsou) and the sprite Ariel (Ben Whishaw)—await them. Packed with eye-popping visuals, costumes, and a sterling cast—which also includes Alan Cumming, Tom Conti, Alfred Molina and Russell Brand—The Tempest is a visionary tour-de-force from one of modern cinema's most inventive directors.
