official description

TIFF is proud to partner with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for a special weekend devoted to the Academy's invaluable restorations of four cinematic masterpieces, three of which are on the Essential 100 list. Every screening will be followed by a short presentation with slides, before-and-after demonstrations, and an in-depth discussion with Academy Film Archive Director Michael Pogorzelski describing the unique challenges each film posed to the restoration teams.

As part of our weekend devoted to Essential Restorations, we will feature the premiere of the most recent restoration by the Academy's Satyajit Ray Preservation Project, the 1977 comedy The Chess Players. Academy Film Archive Director Michael Pogorzelski will be in attendance to discuss the restoration process after the screening.

Michael Pogorzelski is the Director of the Academy Film Archive in Los Angeles, California. He received his Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Film Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and began his work at the Academy in 1996, where he has co-supervised the restoration or preservation of dozens of short and feature films, including four Best Picture winners.

This programme is presented in collaboration with the
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
