Mystical, poetic and brazenly homoerotic, the films of legendary avant-gardist Kenneth Anger draw from such diverse influences as Jean Cocteau, Alfred Kinsey and infamous English occultist Aleister Crowley for their bacchanalian tributes to the pleasures of the flesh. Dubbed by the director a "death mirror [held] up to American culture", Scorpio Rising utilizes a pirated soundtrack of 1950s rock n' roll hits to score its mythopoetic celebration of biker-boy youth culture. Anger worshipfully fetishizes and exalts his rough trade idols through rituals of ultra-violence, hedonistic eroticism and cheekily blasphemous parallels with the life of Christ. Anger's most notorious and successful work, Scorpio Rising signaled the emergence of the "underground" cinema into the mainstream, influenced generations of directors from Martin Scorsese to Gus Van Sant, and presciently anticipated the postmodernist aesthetic of music videos.
