official description

Often referred to as France's Gone With the Wind, Marcel Carné's lavish historical romance was made under the Nazi occupation, where the years-long production process reportedly served as a haven for Resistance members. Set in the early nineteenth century along Paris' infamous Boulevard du Crime—the nexus of both the city's criminal underworld and its theatre scene—the film tells a fictionalized version of the lives of the famous mime Baptiste Debureau (Jean-Louis Barrault), the actor Frédérick Lemaître (Pierre Brasseur) and the notorious criminal Lacenaire (Marcel Herrand), all of whom are in love with the beautiful courtesan Garance (Arletty), who loves each man in her own way. A spellbinding recreation of a vibrant and tumultuous era, Children of Paradise is the jewel in the crown of classic French cinema.
