NEW PRINT!

Ingmar Bergman's medieval allegory tells the tale of a fourteenth-century knight (Max von Sydow) who returns home from the Crusades to a country ravaged by plague, witch hunts and frenzied self-flagellation. When Death himself (Bengt Ekerot) comes to claim him, the knight challenges him to a game of chess, hoping to gain enough time to overcome his spiritual doubt before he perishes. With a visual palette derived from medieval paintings, Shakespearean interpolations of low comedy and some of the cinema's most memorable images (including the famous "Dance of Death" across a chalk-grey horizon), The Seventh Seal displays Bergman's wrestling with his perpetual theme of God's silence at its most nakedly symbolic.
