official description

Combining the cinema of social consciousness with the dynamic visual language of music videos and advertising, Fernando Meirelles' decade-spanning epic focuses on the slum children of the Rio de Janeiro favelas, trapped in a never-ending cycle of violence which they accept without question. Observing the growth of the drug trade and the escalation of gang violence through the eyes of a young, aspiring photographer, the film depicts the rise to power of a brutal young gang leader whose band of nine- to fourteen-year-olds take control of the local drug trade by killing off most of their competition. Granted a gritty authenticity by the non-professional child actors recruited from the very favelas the film recreates, City of God offers a rare and disturbing glimpse of the underbelly of Brazilian life.
