official description

A true feast for the eyes, Italian master Luchino Visconti's sumptuous adaptation of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's epic novel chronicles the downfall of a noble Sicilian family as the old world gives way to a new order in the wake of Garibaldi's nationalist uprising of 1861. A majestic Burt Lancaster plays the title role, an aging prince clinging to traditional aristocratic values in the face of the ascendant bourgeoisie after the end of the Risorgimento, with Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale as the winsome young lovers who, Lancaster realizes with both affection and trepidation, herald the new world to come—a world announced by the final ball at the prince's palace, one of the most famous sequences in film history.
