ARCHIVAL PRINT!

A triumphant wedding of European style and American narrative, of the naturalistic and the fantastic, the first American film by the great German director F.W. Murnau lavishes boundless visual invention on the simple plot of a temptress from the city entering the rural Eden of a young couple and convincing the husband (George O'Brien) to murder his wife (Janet Gaynor). Granted unprecedented creative and financial freedom, Murnau and his production team essentially built their own dream city—including a gigantic, whirligigging carnival, a cavernous restaurant and a magnificent street set with working trolley car—which only amplifies, rather than dwarfs, their touchingly simple story of love threatened and rekindled.
