official description

Francis Ford Coppola's Shakespearean portrait of a powerful Mafia family in post-WWII New York City brilliantly combined the virtues of the Old Hollywood—a stately, classical style of lighting and photography courtesy of ace cinematographer Gordon Willis and a rich, unforgettable score by Nino Rota—with the kinetic violence and moral ambiguity of the New. Implicitly chronicling the transition from the courtly values of the Old World to the cold expedience of corporate America, The Godfather focuses on aging patriarch Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando), who handles his dirty business with regal nobility and a curious kind of morality, and his youngest son Michael (Al Pacino), a war hero who tries to steer clear of the world of crime until he finds the bonds of family inexorably drawing him back towards it. Featuring iconic performances by a dazzling supporting cast of soon-to-be stars (James Caan, Talia Shire, the late John Cazale, Robert Duvall and Diane Keaton) and old lions (Sterling Hayden, Richard Conte), The Godfather recreated the classic family saga for a more cynical and embittered era.
