official description

The succès de scandale of the 1960 Cannes film festival, Michelangelo Antonioni's modernist masterpiece tells of the inexplicable disappearance of a wealthy young woman on a rocky island during a pleasure trip. The girl's best friend (Monica Vitti) and fiancé, a disillusioned architect (Gabriele Ferzetti), set out to find her along the coast of southern Italy, but their search becomes increasingly half-hearted as they find themselves falling in love with each other—or are they merely in love with the idea of being in love? Mysterious, allusive and audacious in its visual and narrative design, L'Avventura's penetrating study of upper-class anomie and the "sickness" of modern love announced the cinema's equality to the novel in its capacity for formal experimentation and social and psychological exploration. "More than any other film L'Avventura seems to define the spirit of a time in cinema when anything seemed possible and there was no territory into which it could not venture. Above all what it seeks to capture is the world of fleeting emotion, feelings which are unstable and crystallize only momentarily in the camera's gaze" (Geoffrey Nowell-Smith).
