official description

Although lesser known than Don Quixote author Miguel de Cervantes, Lope de Vega was Spain’s most prolific writer. In fact, Cervantes nicknamed him “The Phoenix of Wits” and “Monster of Nature”because of the sheer volume of his work, which includes eighteen hundred plays, three thousand sonnets, three novels, four novellas and nine epic poems. In addition to being an immensely productive writer, Lope was also an extremely passionate man whose life reads like an adventure novel. In his latest feature, Brazilian filmmaker Andrucha Waddington brings this fascinating playwright to life.

In an eye-catching performance, newcomer Alberto Amman portrays the young poet Felix Lope de Vega as he returns to Madrid a penniless soldier. After a life filled with fighting, Lope is anxious to fulfill his dreams of becoming a playwright. Soon he gets his foot in the door with the most successful theatre troupe in Madrid and just as quickly falls for his boss’s seductive daughter,Elena (Pilar López de Ayala). However, when he discovers that she is married, the turbulent troubadour throws his career out the window. At the premiere of his first play, he publicly denounces Elena as a whore and her father as a pimp in a scandalous sword fight that leaves the theatre, and Lope’s reputation, in ruins. Now wanted for libel and fearing the gallows,Lope must flee Madrid for Lisbon with his childhood friend, the beautiful Isabel de Urbina (Leonor Watling).

Lope is an incorrigible Casanova whose love of women continuously lands him in trouble. But his honesty and passion make him such an endearing character that even Father Bernardo (Luis Tosar)cannot condemn him. Waddington draws tremendous passion from Amman, and the rich cinematography, engaging script and outstanding cast provide a thrillingly entertaining experience. Lope de Vega was a unique and provocative artist who lived a life filled with as much drama as his plays.Waddington’s film brings all his passion and his art to life.
