With Chocolate
screening Saturday, it's a good time to remember the ladies of
asskickery and to wonder whether Jeeja Yanin will join their ranks.
Cheng Pei-Pei is a veteran of Shaw
Studios and the queen of wuxia pian (sometimes called "swordsman" movies) in Shaw's
heyday. Her most famous role is as the genderbending, knifewielding
Golden Swallow in King Hu's groundbreaking 1966 Come Drink With Me and Chang Cheh's 1968 Golden Swallow.
She's also gone toe to toe with the
Master Killer himself, Gordon Liu, in Stephen Chow Sing-Chi's Flirting
Scholar. And many people
probably know her best as the crafty Jade Fox in Ang Lee's homage to King Hu's films, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
